When it comes to remodeling, subtle changes often make the biggest impact in a space. This once-tired kitchen proves that point. The original layout functioned well, but we reconfigured the island to provide better storage. We replaced the wall that once housed the double ovens with cabinetry and removed the bulkheads. As a result, the cabinets now extend to the ceiling, creating the illusion of a larger room and giving the space a more custom feel. We also replaced the desk adjacent to the eating area with a custom-built china cabinet featuring glass doors, decorative mullions, and interior lighting, perfect for displaying glassware.

Decorative glass doors flank both sides of the cooktop, creating a focal point upon entering the kitchen. A crushed glass mosaic blanket behind the cooktop enhances this focal point and pairs nicely with the 2”x8” travertine modified subway tile.

We updated the original neutral color palette with rich amaretto-stained cabinetry and elegant Cambria countertops. Raised panel cabinet doors and decorative trims and moldings maintain the kitchen’s traditional and timeless feel. We sanded and refinished the floors in a slightly lighter color. The lighter floors contrast with the darker perimeter cabinets and painted island, creating a dynamic feel in the space. Neutral tones paired with a variety of materials and textures keep the room visually stimulating without feeling overpowering.
Additionally, recessed can lights provide uniform light throughout the room. We placed pendant lights above the island and added lighting inside the glass cabinets and beneath the cabinets. Together, these elements create a beautifully lit and comfortable space.

We kept the layout and color palette of the room the same. However, we updated the materials with warm, rich colors to elegantly rejuvenate this Carmel kitchen.
